Tokyo National Museum [TNM] opened in 1872 and boasts the longest history of any museum in Japan. The TNM grounds include five exhibition building – the Honkan [Japanese Gallery], Toyokan [Asian Gallery], Heiseikan [Japanese Archaeology Gallery and Special exhibition venue], Gallery of Horyuji Treasures [ancient Buddhist art], and Hyokeikan – in addition to the Research and Information Center, With a focus on Japan, around 3,000 works of Asian art including paintings, calligraphy, kimonos, and Japanese sword, are on view at one time.
