Ueno Zoological Gardens
Meet lively animals, including the popular Giant Pandas
Japan’s first zoo, established in 1882. The East Garden with its lush greenery and the West Garden with the Shinobazu Pond are connected by monorail and a footpath. The zoo is home to various animals including the Giant Pandas RiRi and ShinShin, Elephants, Gorillas, Tigers, Giraffes, and Penguins. The “statue-like" shoe-billed stock, which can remain still for hours, is a recent favorite among visitors. In order to communicate the importance of wildlife converservation, the zoo is applying its handling and feeding techniques accumulated through the years to create an attractive environment for both its animals visitors.
